Moduretic is a drug that is used to lower blood pressure levels and treat heart failure. Both these objectives are achieved by its ability to expel excess salts and fluid from the body. The release of fluids helps the vessels relax which allows blood to pass through easily. This reduces the pressure within the vessels which helps reduce overall blood pressure.
The drug is also used to help maintain constant levels of Potassium in the blood.
This is an orally administered drug which is usually prescribed one or two times a day. The dosage and frequency will depend on your health condition and your body’s reaction to the drug. It is much better to take the drug at least 4 hours prior to going to bed. This is to avoid having to wake up in order to urinate, since the drug induces extra urine production within the kidneys.
Patients taking cholesterol drugs should make sure they take Moduretic before or after a time interval of 4 hours. It is important to take this drug regularly and to stick to a specific time every day.
It is advisable to avoid alcohol as much as possible while using this drug. Consuming food with high concentrations of salt will prevent you from experiencing the maximum benefit of the drug as it will retain a lot of water within your body.
Be careful not to take any salt substitutes that contain high levels of Potassium. Since Moduretic prevents the loss of
Potassium from the body, additional quantities of this ion might get accumulated.
Avoid dehydrating yourself too much since you will be losing a certain quantity of liquid from your body due to the drug. Regulate your exercises and control exposure to the sun accordingly.
Avoid driving and working with risky machinery if you feel like the drug is impairing your ability to concentrate and react.
Be mindful of how much liquid you drink on a daily basis and consult your doctor regarding the recommended amount.
If you are allergic to the drug, you may experience rashes, swelling, hives and difficulty breathing. You should inform your doctor regarding any such condition upon which you will be recommended to stop the drug.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nervousness, confusion and numbness in fingers and toes are among the most common side effects of Moduretic. Wheezing, tightness in the chest, dizziness and fainting are less common side effects while joint pains, bloody urine, burning while urinating, bloody stools, blistering and bruising are the rarest side effects that can occur.
However, it is important that you consult a doctor if you see any of these effects.
Trembling, mood swings, drowsiness and a weak pulse could be indications of an overdose. In such an instance, visit the nearest ER as soon as possible. Getting the drug out of your system or using another chemical to neutralize its effects will help you feel well again.
The need to urinate often is a natural side effect of the drug and shouldn’t worry you unless it seems to affect your quality of life.
