Flovent, also commonly known as fluticosone, is a medication that is used to treat symptoms that are associated with asthma. It is important to note that the medication is not used to cure the condition but only to reduce its chances of occurrence.
How it works
Flovent is a steroid that belongs to a group of medications commonly known as corticosteroids. The medication controls the symptoms of asthma by preventing the release of substances in the body that are responsible for causing inflammation in various body parts. When the swelling is reduced – especially in the airways, it enables breathing to function more easily.
Flovent is mainly used to reduce symptoms that are related to asthma. This enables affected individuals to take part in their daily activities more effectively. Remember that this medication will not be effective in case of an asthma attack since it is only used to prevent the condition, not cure it. Flovent can also be used with a combination of other types of medications in order to prevent certain lung diseases such as COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The medication is used though an inhaler. If you are using the inhaler for the first time, make sure to read the instructions on the label very carefully. Make sure to place the container correctly since it must not be sprayed anywhere near your eyes. Inhale the medication by mouth and shake it well before using it. Although people commonly use it twice a day – usually in the morning and evening – consult your physician before you fix the schedule. If you are using two inhalations for each time, make sure to keep a 10 second gap between the two puffs.
Listed below are some of the side effects that patients experience when using Flovent.
Weakness or tired feeling
Blurred vision or eye pain
Sores inside the mouth
Even though you may not experience all of these symptoms, it is best to contact your physician since they can deteriorate into worse conditions.
Make sure to follow the tips given below in order to ensure that you do not harm yourself or make the condition worse accidently.
Never use Flovent in the case of an asthma attack since it cannot work quick enough to reduce the effects of the attack.
Gargle and rinse your mouth well after each use to avoid any possible irritation.
Do not stop the medication abruptly since it can result in severe withdrawal symptoms.
Clean the inhaler regularly in order to avoid contamination.
Do not change the dose or take it more regularly without consulting your physician.
In case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, surgery or severe illness, consult your healthcare provider since you will have to alter the dosage according to your current condition.
Remember that the more you use this medication, the more you will benefit from it. However, this does not mean that you must overdose since it can end terribly. Make sure to space the inhalations evenly and stick to a timetable.
