Decadron is a drug known as a corticosteroid. It functions by stopping vulnerable human tissue from getting inflamed because of an infection. It can also change how the human body reacts to immune system stimuli.
It is used in the treatment of disorders where the adrenal gland is affected. It is also used to treat conditions that cause inflammation, such as asthma, allergies, arthritis, colitis, lupus, multiple sclerosis and other eye and skin disorders.
Decadron interacts with the immune system. In some cases it can reduce the effect of your immune system, leaving your body more susceptible to infection.
When taking Decadron, stay away from people with coughs and colds. Tell a doctor immediately if you have fever, a sore throat or other symptoms.
If you are about to get surgery, tell the doctor that you are on Decadron now, as it can react with surgical drugs.
This medicine can cause high blood pressure and can also increase the rate at which you lose potassium. Reduce your salt intake while on it, and take calcium pills.
The drug causes calcium loss in bones, which could lead to osteoporosis. Make sure you have a high calcium and Vitamin D intake.
It can also change blood sugar levels. This can cause complications in diabetics. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have diabetes.
Children on Decadron can have an impacted growth rate. They also are more vulnerable to the side effects of the drug.
The drug’s effect on fetuses in pregnant women is not known, but it is possible that it is harmful to the child. If you are on Decadron and you become pregnant, tell a doctor immediately.
Decadron has been found to pass into breast milk. Never feed your child with breast milk while you are on Decadron. Do not use the drug if you have allergies to its ingredients, or if you have a fungal infection. Do not take it if you are on mifepristone.
